English Version
Ryugu no Sasoi centers on Sato, a young man working as a floor staff member in a hostess club surrounded by nightlife, alcohol, and artificial intimacy. To most people, he appears quiet and ordinary, just another forgotten figure drifting through the shadows of the city. Beneath that surface, however, he hides a terrifying obsession — an urge to consume human flesh. The film treats this disturbing desire less as shock value and more as a symbolic manifestation of emotional emptiness, violent instinct, and the craving to dominate or absorb others completely. Rather than explaining the origins of his impulses directly, the story gradually immerses viewers into Sato’s fractured psychological state. His descent begins when he finds a lost smartphone at work. What initially seems insignificant quickly drags him into a dangerous underground network controlled by two mysterious men who blackmail him into becoming a courier for illegal operations. The work is risky but extremely profitable, offering Sato something he has never truly possessed before: money, power, and a sense of purpose. As he becomes increasingly involved in the criminal world, the boundaries between fantasy and action begin to collapse. The more wealth he gains, the more his hidden desires intensify. One of the film’s greatest strengths is its refusal to portray Sato as a traditional villain. Instead, director Jun Yamada presents him as a deeply isolated young man shaped by urban alienation, emotional detachment, and the seductive pull of violence. The city itself becomes a suffocating labyrinth filled with neon lights, cramped interiors, and endless nighttime streets that mirror the protagonist’s mental deterioration. Every decision he makes pushes him further away from reality and deeper into a psychological abyss. The title, which references the mythical Dragon Palace from Japanese folklore, functions as a metaphor for temptation — an alluring underworld that promises escape while trapping those who enter it forever. Beyond its psychological horror elements, the film also reflects contemporary anxieties surrounding illegal underground jobs targeting vulnerable young people in Japan. These so-called “dark part-time jobs” lure individuals with easy money while slowly eroding their morality and identity. Ryugu no Sasoi transforms this social issue into a haunting character study about self-destruction and uncontrollable desire. The film avoids excessive gore and instead builds tension through silence, atmosphere, and emotional unease. First-time actor Shun Tobari delivers an intense and remarkably natural performance, capturing the gradual unraveling of a man consumed by impulses he can no longer suppress. The result is a crime thriller that feels raw, intimate, and deeply unsettling. Winning the Grand Prix at the Tanabe Benkei Film Festival as the festival’s first suspense-film champion further established the movie as one of the standout independent Japanese thrillers of its year.
