When Sony launched the original PlayStation in 1994, few expected the electronics giant to challenge Nintendo and SEGA. Yet within only a few years, PlayStation transformed the console industry through new technology, developer-friendly policies, and blockbuster games, forever changing how the world played video games.

English Version
During the early 1990s, the home console market was dominated by Nintendo and SEGA. Nintendo’s Super Famicom ruled Japan, while the SEGA Mega Drive enjoyed enormous popularity across North America and Europe. Sony was not yet a console manufacturer but had worked with Nintendo on a planned CD-ROM add-on for the Super Nintendo. However, after the partnership collapsed in 1991, Sony made the bold decision to develop its own game console—a decision that would ultimately reshape the entire video game industry.
The original PlayStation launched in Japan on December 3, 1994. Instead of relying on expensive game cartridges, Sony adopted the CD-ROM format. CDs offered significantly greater storage capacity, lower manufacturing costs, and the ability to include full-motion video, high-quality music, voice acting, and much larger game worlds. This technological shift encouraged developers to create more ambitious experiences and accelerated the transition into the 3D gaming era.
Sony’s success was not built on technology alone. The company actively welcomed third-party developers by providing accessible development tools, competitive licensing terms, and lower production costs than cartridge-based systems. As a result, companies including NAMCO, CAPCOM, Konami, Square, and Enix brought many of their biggest franchises to PlayStation, rapidly building one of the strongest software libraries in gaming history.
A defining moment arrived in 1997 with the release of Final Fantasy VII. Because its cinematic presentation and massive amount of data exceeded the practical limits of game cartridges, Square chose Sony’s CD-based platform over Nintendo. The game’s worldwide success introduced Japanese role-playing games to millions of Western players and became one of the biggest reasons consumers purchased a PlayStation.
The console soon became home to many legendary franchises. Resident Evil redefined survival horror, Metal Gear Solid elevated cinematic storytelling, Gran Turismo established a new benchmark for realistic driving simulations, while Crash Bandicoot, Tekken, Ridge Racer, and Silent Hill became iconic symbols of the PlayStation era.
Sony also transformed how players interacted with games. The Dual Analog Controller introduced twin analog sticks, while the DualShock controller added vibration feedback, creating a control scheme that quickly became the industry standard. Modern controllers from both PlayStation and Xbox still reflect many of these design principles.
Perhaps PlayStation’s greatest achievement was changing public perception of video games. Rather than focusing primarily on children, Sony successfully expanded gaming toward teenagers and adults through mature marketing and a diverse catalogue of action, horror, racing, simulation, sports, and cinematic adventures. Video games increasingly became mainstream entertainment instead of being viewed simply as children’s toys.
The momentum continued with the launch of PlayStation 2 in 2000. Combining DVD playback with an extraordinary library of games and continued third-party support, the console eventually sold more than 160 million units worldwide, becoming the best-selling home console in history.
Looking back, PlayStation changed far more than the console market. By embracing CD technology, supporting developers, introducing innovative controllers, and delivering unforgettable games, Sony fundamentally reshaped the direction of interactive entertainment. More than thirty years after its debut, PlayStation remains one of the most influential brands in gaming history and a symbol of how innovation can transform an entire industry.
