Sai Kung Ghost Trail: The Mysterious Compass Malfunction and Haunted Hiking Experience in Hong Kong
English Version
Deep within the eastern mountains of Sai Kung, the mist lingers heavily among the trees, so thick it feels almost tangible, as if something unseen is hiding within it, waiting patiently for those who wander in by mistake. The trails in this region twist and overlap like an enormous natural labyrinth, where even experienced hikers can easily lose their sense of direction. Locals have long whispered about a place known as the “Ghost Trail,” a path where those who enter either lose their way or experience an unexplainable chill creeping through their bodies. A Jun, an avid hiking enthusiast who thrives on exploration and challenge, had always dismissed such stories as superstition. To him, these tales were nothing more than exaggerated fears born from difficult terrain and human imagination. One overcast weekend, he gathered a few friends and proposed an adventure into Sai Kung’s lesser-known paths, hoping to test their limits and perhaps even uncover the truth behind the rumored Ghost Trail. The weather that day was gloomy, with thick clouds pressing low against the sky, creating an atmosphere that felt both heavy and foreboding, yet none of them hesitated. Armed with a compass, maps, and sufficient supplies, they set off with confidence and excitement. At first, everything went smoothly as they followed an old mountain path lined with worn stone steps and surrounded by dense woodland. The distant sounds of birds echoed through the forest, adding a sense of calm that made the journey feel almost ordinary. However, as they descended into a valley, the situation began to shift in subtle but unsettling ways. A Jun took out his compass to check their direction, only to find the needle spinning erratically without settling. At first, he assumed it was a simple mistake or perhaps his hand was unsteady, so he placed the compass on a large rock, but the needle continued its restless rotation. His friend Ah Wai laughed it off, suggesting the compass might be broken and telling him not to overreact. Although slightly uneasy, A Jun decided to ignore the malfunction and pressed on. Yet as they continued, a growing sense of disorientation crept in. The path that should have been straightforward began to curve and loop unpredictably, and to their confusion, they found themselves returning repeatedly to the same spot—a peculiar tree marked by an unusual growth protruding from its trunk. “Are we lost?” Xiao Mei asked nervously, her voice trembling. A Jun tried to remain calm, insisting that with a map and navigation tools, it was impossible to lose their way. But when he checked his phone, the GPS signal flickered wildly, the location marker jumping across the screen without settling on any fixed point. The mist thickened rapidly, swallowing the surroundings in a dense white haze that blurred the outlines of trees and rocks, making them appear distorted and almost alive. Ah Wai switched on his flashlight, but the beam struggled to penetrate the fog, illuminating only a short distance ahead before fading into nothingness. The atmosphere grew increasingly oppressive, and even the sounds of nature seemed to vanish, replaced by an eerie silence broken only by their own footsteps and breathing. Suggesting they turn back, Ah Wai tried retracing their route, but every path they chose seemed to lead them back to the same strange tree, as if the valley itself was trapping them within an invisible loop. Time passed slowly, and as daylight began to fade, anxiety turned into fear. A Jun felt a cold sensation rising from the ground through his body, sending chills down his spine. Then, faintly, he heard something—a whisper, barely audible yet unmistakable, calling his name. “A Jun… A Jun…” He spun around, heart pounding, but saw nothing. When he asked the others, they initially denied hearing anything, but Xiao Mei hesitated before admitting she too had heard a voice calling her name. A sense of dread settled over the group as they realized this was no ordinary hiking mishap. Determined to escape, they quickened their pace, but no matter how fast or far they went, they found themselves once again at the same tree. Suddenly, through the mist, a vague human silhouette appeared in the distance, standing motionless and facing them. “Who’s there?” A Jun shouted, his voice echoing unnaturally in the valley. The figure did not respond or move. Gathering his courage, A Jun stepped closer, trying to make out its features, but just as he focused his gaze, the figure vanished instantly into the fog, leaving nothing behind. Panic broke out among the group, and Xiao Mei was on the verge of tears as they began running in different directions, desperate to escape. Yet each frantic attempt led them back to the same point, as if the mountain itself refused to let them leave. Time seemed to lose meaning as exhaustion, fear, and despair slowly eroded their composure. Just when they felt they could go no further, a faint light appeared on the horizon, signaling the approach of dawn. As the mist gradually lifted, they found themselves standing not in the valley, but on a familiar main trail outside it, as though they had never been trapped at all. “We’re out?” A Jun muttered in disbelief, scanning the surroundings he now recognized. He looked down at his compass, which had finally stabilized, its needle pointing steadily once more. Relief washed over him, yet it was accompanied by a lingering unease he could not shake. After returning to the city, they shared their experience with other hikers. Some dismissed their story as panic-induced confusion, while others reacted with knowing fear, insisting they had encountered the infamous Ghost Trail. Although A Jun continued to resist believing in the supernatural, the memory of that valley, the strange tree, and the silent figure in the mist haunted him. Late at night, when the world fell quiet, he would recall the whisper that called his name and wonder whether the stories he once dismissed might hold some truth after all. And somewhere deep in Sai Kung’s mountains, that hidden path may still exist, waiting silently for the next unsuspecting traveler to step into its endless loop.
