Far East of Eden: Kabuki Klash brings Hudson Soft’s colourful Tengai Makyo universe into the world of arcade fighting. Released in 1995, it combines sword-based combat, exaggerated special moves, colourful characters and random power-ups, creating a playful alternative to the more conventional fighters of its generation.

《Far East of Eden: Kabuki Klash》日文原名《天外魔境 真伝》(Tengai Makyō: Shinden),是一款由 Hudson Soft 相關團隊開發、SNK 發行的2D格鬥遊戲,於1995年登上 Neo Geo MVS、Neo Geo AES 及 Neo Geo CD。 當時 Neo Geo 已經聚集了《Fatal Fury》、《Art of Fighting》、《Samurai Shodown》及《The King of Fighters》等強勢格鬥品牌,因此一款來自 RPG 系列的衍生格鬥作品要在這個市場中建立自己的位置並不容易。

English Version

Far East of Eden: Kabuki Klash, known in Japan as Tengai Makyō: Shinden, is a 2D fighting game that transformed Hudson Soft’s famous Tengai Makyo RPG universe into an arcade combat experience. Released in 1995 for the Neo Geo MVS, Neo Geo AES and later Neo Geo CD, the game stands apart from many Neo Geo fighters because its characters and setting originate from a fantasy role-playing series rather than an original fighting-game franchise. The world of Tengai Makyo is set in the fictional land of Jipang, inspired by an exaggerated interpretation of historical Japan. Its stories combine fantasy adventure, humour and deliberately unconventional characters. Kabuki Klash carries that spirit into its fighting system, creating a colourful battlefield where swordplay and spectacular special attacks exist alongside deliberately comic characters and unpredictable items. The main roster contains eight selectable fighters, including Sengoku Manjimaru, Kabuki Danjuro, Gokuraku Taro, Kinu, Ziria, Tsunade, Orochimaru and Yagumo. Four additional characters serve as bosses, giving the game a total cast larger than its initial playable roster. Manjimaru and several other fighters are familiar figures from the Tengai Makyo RPG universe, while Kabuki Danjuro brings an especially distinctive kabuki-inspired personality to the game. The characters are intentionally exaggerated, allowing Kabuki Klash to maintain the humorous atmosphere of its source material rather than becoming a purely serious sword-fighting game. The basic combat system uses an eight-way joystick and four attack buttons. Players can perform light and medium attacks, kicks, throws, special techniques and powerful desperation-style attacks. The Neo Geo MVS version supports two-player competitive action, making it suitable for both single-player progression and direct arcade battles. One of the game’s more unusual mechanics is the appearance of random power-up items during a fight. These items can enter the battlefield unexpectedly, sometimes being delivered by characters such as the Karasu Tengu. Players therefore have another tactical consideration beyond simply attacking the opponent. Grabbing a useful item at the right moment can add an unpredictable element to the match and reinforce the game’s playful personality. The overall combat style is strongly based around Japanese swordplay, but it is deliberately more extravagant than realistic martial arts. Special moves and powerful attacks can become visually spectacular, giving the game an animated, larger-than-life feeling. This helps distinguish Kabuki Klash from the more serious atmosphere of some other Neo Geo fighting games. It shares certain ideas with sword-based fighters such as Samurai Shodown, but its fantasy characters, humour and item mechanics give it a different identity. Contemporary and historical references describe it as a Japanese swordplay fighting game with eight selectable characters, four end bosses and random bonus items appearing during battles. Kabuki Klash is also historically significant because it represents an unusual collaboration between the Tengai Makyo property and the Neo Geo platform. It was the only Tengai Makyo title released for an SNK system and became the only game from the series to receive an official release outside Japan. This is especially interesting because the Neo Geo fighting-game market was already crowded in 1995. SNK had established major franchises including Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, Samurai Shodown and The King of Fighters, so a fighting game based on an RPG series needed a clear identity. Kabuki Klash achieved that through its colourful cast, fantasy setting and humorous presentation instead of attempting to compete solely through conventional realism. The Neo Geo AES release followed the arcade version in July 1995, while the Neo Geo CD edition arrived in November of the same year. The CD release gave home players another way to experience a title originally designed around the arcade environment. For modern retro-gaming audiences, Kabuki Klash is interesting on several levels. It can be enjoyed as a straightforward two-dimensional fighting game, but it also serves as a window into a larger Japanese RPG universe. Players unfamiliar with Tengai Makyo can still appreciate the combat, while fans of the original series can recognise characters and elements from the wider franchise. The game may not have achieved the legendary status of SNK’s biggest fighters, yet its unusual background makes it one of the more distinctive titles in the Neo Geo library. It demonstrates how the platform could accommodate not only established fighting franchises but also experimental adaptations of characters from completely different genres. Looking back, Far East of Eden: Kabuki Klash remains a colourful example of mid-1990s arcade design: fast two-player combat, oversized personalities, exaggerated sword techniques, random battlefield items and a fantasy world inspired by Japanese mythology and history. Its combination of Hudson’s RPG heritage and Neo Geo’s arcade fighting culture gives it a character that is difficult to confuse with anything else from the era.
