English Version
On April 26, 1986, the Chernobyl disaster occurred at a nuclear power plant in what is now Ukraine, marking one of the most catastrophic nuclear accidents in history. The disaster was caused by a combination of reactor design flaws and operator errors during a safety test, leading to a massive explosion in Reactor No. 4. This explosion released a large amount of radioactive material into the atmosphere, forming a radioactive cloud that spread across large parts of Europe. The environmental and health consequences were severe and long-lasting. In the immediate aftermath, authorities delayed public disclosure, worsening the impact of the crisis. Thousands of emergency workers were deployed to contain the damage, many of whom were exposed to dangerous levels of radiation. The nearby city of Pripyat was evacuated and remains largely abandoned, becoming a symbol of the disaster’s lasting effects. The Chernobyl accident fundamentally changed global perceptions of nuclear energy, leading to stricter safety regulations and ongoing debates about the risks and benefits of nuclear power.
