Grim Reaper Barber is a heartwarming fantasy drama directed by Shinji Imaoka that blends supernatural imagination with touching reflections on life, loss, and human connection. Based on an original concept created by Yoichi Umeki as a university project and adapted into a screenplay by Kohei Taniguchi, the film transforms an ordinary beauty salon into an extraordinary place that exists between life and death. Miho Saeki is a hairstylist whose career and personal relationships have both reached frustrating dead ends. Feeling exhausted by constant disappointment, she suffers an accident after slipping down a staircase. When she regains consciousness, she finds herself escorted by Sakuma, an inexperienced young grim reaper, to a mysterious salon called “Make Up.” Unlike any ordinary hair salon, this unusual establishment is operated entirely by grim reapers whose responsibility is to prepare the deceased for their final appearance before allowing them one last day to reunite with loved ones still living in the human world. Through careful grooming and compassionate guidance, they help families share meaningful farewells before parting forever. Soon, however, everyone realizes that a serious mistake has occurred. Miho was brought there by accident—her true time of death is still several days away. Unable to return immediately, she temporarily remains at the salon, witnessing countless emotional farewells between the deceased and those they leave behind. Each encounter reveals different stories of regret, forgiveness, gratitude, reconciliation, and enduring love. As Miho observes these final moments, she begins questioning the choices she has made throughout her own life. Gradually, the bitterness that once defined her outlook gives way to appreciation for everyday moments and the relationships she had taken for granted. Rather than presenting death as something frightening, the film portrays it as an opportunity for reflection, closure, and emotional healing. Combining gentle humor, imaginative fantasy, and heartfelt storytelling, Grim Reaper Barber explores universal themes including mortality, family, romance, forgiveness, and the importance of expressing feelings before it is too late.
