When the ideal of a “perfect family” becomes an unquestioned belief, where does love end and emotional confinement begin? This satirical ensemble drama explores the hidden contradictions behind modern family life.
English Version
The Illness Called Family is an ensemble drama adapted from Akiko Shimoju’s bestselling essay collection that questions society’s deeply rooted belief in the ideal family. Written and directed by Chikako Oyama, the film combines satire, dark comedy, and emotional realism to examine how family expectations can quietly shape—and sometimes imprison—the lives of ordinary people. Rather than following a single protagonist, the story weaves together several seemingly unrelated families whose struggles reveal different aspects of modern domestic life. Junichiro Tahara is a successful mystery novelist whose creativity has gradually faded under the overwhelming influence of his controlling wife. Although admired by readers, he realizes that years of compromising his true voice have left him emotionally disconnected from himself. Yuji Matsubara, once an accomplished corporate executive, continues pretending to hold an important position long after retirement because he cannot bear to disappoint his elderly mother. At home, he also struggles with an adult son who has withdrawn from society, forcing the family to maintain a fragile illusion of normality. Meanwhile, high school student Maria Kuroki becomes the target of cruel rumors after classmates learn that her mother once worked as an adult film actress. As gossip spreads throughout the school, Maria finds herself questioning not only her identity but also the meaning of dignity and acceptance. Their lives unexpectedly intersect with Mori Fujita, a young novelist whose provocative literary work celebrating the human body challenges conventional ideas of morality, family, and freedom. At the edge of society, a homeless woman living peacefully in a public park quietly offers an entirely different perspective on happiness, independence, and belonging. Through these interconnected stories, the film asks whether people truly choose their lives or simply continue performing roles assigned by family and society. Blending irony with compassion, The Illness Called Family encourages audiences to reconsider the assumptions surrounding family relationships, social expectations, and personal identity. It suggests that genuine love cannot exist where control replaces understanding, making this both an entertaining social satire and a thoughtful reflection on what it truly means to live authentically.
