English Version
At the end of World War II, Korea emerged from decades of Japanese colonial rule. Instead of becoming a unified nation, however, the peninsula was divided along the 38th parallel. Soviet forces occupied the north while American forces administered the south. As Cold War tensions intensified, two separate governments were established, each claiming legitimacy over the entire peninsula.
In the early hours of June 25, 1950, North Korean forces crossed the 38th parallel and launched a large-scale invasion of South Korea. The attack quickly overwhelmed many southern defenses, and Seoul fell within days. What began as a regional conflict soon developed into a major international crisis.
The United Nations responded by authorizing military assistance for South Korea. Led primarily by the United States, multinational forces entered the conflict under the UN flag. Later that year, Chinese forces joined the fighting in support of North Korea, transforming the war into one of the defining proxy conflicts of the Cold War.
The battlefield shifted dramatically throughout the next three years. Operations such as the Inchon Landing reversed the momentum at one stage, while later offensives pushed the front lines back again. Fierce battles, harsh weather, and difficult terrain contributed to enormous military and civilian casualties.
By 1953, both sides had reached a military stalemate. An armistice agreement established the Korean Demilitarized Zone, creating a buffer between North and South Korea. Although active fighting ceased, no formal peace treaty was signed, meaning the conflict technically remains unresolved.
The Korean War had lasting global consequences. It intensified Cold War rivalries, strengthened military alliances, and influenced international security policies for decades. On the Korean Peninsula, the two states followed dramatically different political and economic paths, creating one of the world’s most enduring divisions.
Today, June 25 is remembered as the beginning of a conflict that reshaped modern Asia and affected global geopolitics. The Korean War stands as a reminder of the devastating costs of armed conflict and the continuing importance of diplomacy, dialogue, and efforts toward lasting peace.
