Romance of the Three Kingdoms Chapter 110: Jiang Wei’s Northern Expeditions Falter as Shu Han Faces Crisis on Every Front

2026-08-27

Jiang Wei carried on Zhuge Liang’s unfinished Northern Expeditions, but victory remained increasingly difficult. Wei’s defenses were stronger, while Shu Han’s resources were steadily being exhausted by years of warfare. With military pressure from the north and growing difficulties at home, Jiang Wei found himself fighting not only Wei, but also the decline of the kingdom he was trying to protect.

English Version

After Zhuge Liang’s death, Jiang Wei continued to carry the unfinished Northern Expedition. To him, Zhuge Liang had been more than a teacher. He had been the man who entrusted a generation of military responsibility to him. Jiang Wei therefore repeatedly marched north, hoping to break through Wei’s defenses and keep alive the dream of restoring the Han dynasty. But the reality of war was becoming increasingly difficult. Wei had spent years strengthening its defenses across Guanzhong and the western frontier. Its commanders did not need to seek a decisive battle. They could remain behind fortified positions, rely on local supplies, and wait for Shu forces to exhaust themselves. Every time Jiang Wei launched a campaign, enormous quantities of grain, weapons, horses, and manpower had to be transported from Hanzhong. The farther the army advanced, the longer its supply routes became. Jiang Wei understood that logistics could determine the outcome of a campaign just as much as battlefield tactics. Before every expedition, he examined the available supplies and troop strength carefully. He did not want his soldiers to be trapped in enemy territory without food, nor did he want an ambitious attack to cost Shu more than the kingdom could afford. Yet abandoning the Northern Expeditions carried another danger. If Shu stopped attacking completely, Wei could concentrate more of its enormous resources along the approaches to Hanzhong. Jiang Wei therefore found himself trapped between two choices. Continuing the war weakened Shu, but abandoning the offensive could make Shu even more vulnerable. After another unsuccessful campaign, Shu troops returned to Hanzhong. Exhausted soldiers entered the camps in long lines, while horses weakened by weeks of marching struggled behind them. Jiang Wei stood outside the camp and watched in silence. Many of these soldiers had served through repeated campaigns. Some had fought during Zhuge Liang’s lifetime, while others had joined the army under Jiang Wei. They trusted their commander and believed that Shu still had a future. Yet Jiang Wei understood a harsh truth: courage could not maintain an army by itself. Grain had to be produced, soldiers had to be replaced, weapons had to be repaired, and horses had to be fed. Every military campaign therefore depended upon the strength of the entire kingdom. Shu Han had always possessed fewer people and fewer resources than Wei. Years of war placed increasing pressure upon its farmers and communities. Men who might otherwise have worked in the fields were recruited into the army. Grain that could have supported local families was transported toward the northern frontier. Government resources were continually redirected toward military needs. Gradually, the kingdom began to feel exhausted. In Chengdu, political disagreement grew stronger. Some officials believed that Jiang Wei should stop the Northern Expeditions and allow the population to recover. Others feared that continued warfare would eventually weaken Shu to the point where even its defensive capabilities were threatened. Yet another group argued that abandoning the offensive would be even more dangerous because Wei would become free to concentrate its strength against Shu. Jiang Wei understood every side of the argument. He knew that the kingdom was suffering. But he also believed that complete passivity would surrender the initiative to a much stronger opponent. For that reason, he continued to prepare for another campaign. His purpose was increasingly defensive in nature: by keeping Wei under pressure, he hoped to prevent its armies from concentrating entirely against Shu. But Wei was changing as well. The Sima family was gaining greater political influence, while the Wei military system was becoming more organized. A younger generation of commanders was beginning to emerge, most notably Deng Ai and Zhong Hui. Their rise created a new strategic problem for Jiang Wei. Deng Ai possessed an unusual understanding of terrain and was willing to consider routes that conventional armies might avoid. Zhong Hui had a different strength. He was highly capable in strategic planning and large-scale military organization. Their abilities were different, but together they represented a new kind of threat. Wei was beginning to think beyond simply defending its territory. It was starting to consider whether Shu Han itself could eventually be destroyed. Jiang Wei sensed this change. The war he had inherited from Zhuge Liang was no longer the same war. The older generation of Wei commanders was disappearing, and a younger generation was preparing to reshape the battlefield. Shu had once been the side choosing when to launch campaigns. Now there was a growing possibility that Wei would eventually decide when and where the decisive conflict would take place. This realization made Jiang Wei even more determined to continue fighting. Yet it also created a painful cycle. Every campaign consumed Shu’s resources. Every failed campaign left fewer resources for the next one. Even when Shu achieved a local victory, holding captured territory was difficult. Once the army advanced deep into Wei territory, its supply routes became increasingly vulnerable. When it withdrew, the army had to be reorganized and replenished before another campaign could begin. Slowly, the Northern Expeditions became a struggle that was consuming the very kingdom they were meant to protect. One evening, Jiang Wei stood upon the walls of Hanzhong and looked toward the northern mountains. He remembered Zhuge Liang and the campaigns of an earlier generation. His teacher had also faced the disadvantage of a smaller state, but Shu had once possessed more experienced commanders and a stronger political foundation. Those advantages were now fading. Veteran generals were disappearing, younger officers were still developing, and disagreements within the court were becoming harder to ignore. Jiang Wei realized that time itself was becoming one of Shu’s greatest enemies. Wei could afford to wait. Shu could not. Late one night, Jiang Wei spread the military maps across his desk. Hanzhong, Mount Qi, Longyou, and Guanzhong were all marked before him. He studied the routes for a long time. He knew that every road north carried a price. Yet he also believed that refusing to move would carry an even greater price. The next morning, the Shu army assembled once again. Banners moved in the wind as soldiers checked their weapons and supplies. Jiang Wei knew that another campaign might fail. He knew it might even place greater pressure upon the kingdom. But he continued forward because he believed that as long as Shu Han survived, hope itself could not be abandoned. Beyond the mountains, however, Wei was also preparing. Deng Ai and Zhong Hui were rising, and the strategic balance was beginning to change. Wei was no longer content simply to wait behind its defenses. The danger facing Shu Han was becoming visible from every direction. There was the military strength of Wei in the north. There were shortages of grain and manpower behind the front. There were political disagreements within the court. And there was the endless burden of war itself. Jiang Wei still held his sword, and he still believed in the mission he had inherited. But he could no longer ignore how fragile the kingdom had become. The road toward the north remained open. The dream of restoring the Han still existed. Yet Shu Han was moving steadily toward the most dangerous stage of its history.
