English Version
The film follows Yumeta, a young man who has lost his sense of direction after failing as a teacher and returning to his hometown, where he now works in an old furniture shop. His life feels stagnant, especially when contrasted with his girlfriend Haruko, who works at a funeral home and confronts death daily. Their fragile balance is disrupted when Yumeta’s grandfather, Shigeru, suddenly escapes from a care facility, convinced that he is terminally ill. His unusual request—to hold a living funeral—sets the story in motion. What begins as a journey to find people Shigeru wishes to see before his death gradually transforms into something more profound. Along the way, encounters and moments shift the focus from death to life itself. Each stop, each reunion, becomes a reminder that life is not defined solely by its end, but by the accumulation of present moments. Yumeta is slowly forced to confront his own inertia and avoidance, while Haruko reevaluates her relationship with mortality. Shigeru, at once eccentric and insightful, serves as both catalyst and observer. The film unfolds through quiet conversations and understated pacing, turning themes of life and death into intimate, relatable experiences.
