Fighter’s History Dynamite is the second entry in Data East’s Fighter’s History series and one of the company’s most distinctive attempts to establish itself in the competitive fighting-game market of the mid-1990s. Released in arcades in 1994, the game was developed for the Neo Geo MVS and subsequently appeared on the Neo Geo AES and Neo Geo CD. In Japan it was known as Fighter’s History Dynamite, while overseas releases commonly used the name Karnov’s Revenge. The game follows the familiar one-on-one fighting structure of its era, but its defining feature is the weak-point system. Every fighter has a specific vulnerable area, often represented by part of their clothing or another visible feature. Repeatedly striking this location gradually damages the weak point, and hitting it enough times causes the opponent to become dizzy. Once the weak point has been exploited, the attacker receives an important opportunity to continue the assault. This mechanic gives Fighter’s History Dynamite a different tactical identity from many contemporary fighters. Players are not simply looking for openings to land normal attacks or special moves; they can actively attempt to target a particular part of the opponent’s body. The location of the weak point varies between characters, and its practical accessibility can change according to their stance and movement. As a result, understanding character matchups becomes an important part of mastering the game. The Neo Geo version also changed the control philosophy of the series. Instead of the six-button arrangement used by the original Fighter’s History, Dynamite uses the four-button Neo Geo configuration. This makes the controls straightforward while still providing access to normal attacks, special techniques and powerful finishing moves. The game places considerable emphasis on quick exchanges and combinations, and its simplified control scheme suits the fast arcade environment of the Neo Geo. The roster contains a mixture of returning characters and new fighters. Returning favourites include Makoto Mizoguchi, Ray McDougal, Ryoko Kano, Liu Feilin, Matlok Jade, Samchay Tomyamgun, Lee Diendou, Jean Pierre and Marstorius. The sequel adds Zazie Muhaba and Liu Yungmie, while Clown and Karnov also become part of the playable cast. Karnov is particularly notable because he originated from Data East’s earlier action game of the same name. The game also contains a secret battle against an Ox, which serves as a reference to Data East’s earlier Karate Champ. The combat system is designed around relatively quick and damaging exchanges. Light attacks can be chained together and followed by heavier attacks, with certain attacks capable of being cancelled into special techniques. This gives experienced players room to create practical combo sequences without requiring the elaborate systems found in much later fighting games. Damage output is another defining characteristic. Fighter’s History Dynamite does not use the same type of extensive damage scaling found in many modern fighting games, so successful combinations can remove a substantial amount of the opponent’s life in a short time. This produces a fast and sometimes brutal pace, where a single mistake can quickly turn the match around. The game also has a number of visual details that help distinguish its stages. Its backgrounds feature colourful international settings and small environmental effects, including destructible objects. In one stage, for example, breaking a vase can reveal a snake, adding a little personality to the otherwise straightforward fighting arenas. Fighter’s History Dynamite is also connected to one of the more interesting legal stories of early fighting games. The original Fighter’s History had become involved in a lawsuit with Capcom because of similarities to Street Fighter II. The court case ultimately did not prevent Data East from continuing the series, and the Neo Geo sequel became a significant part of the franchise’s history. From a modern retro-gaming perspective, the game’s greatest strength is arguably its willingness to experiment with a mechanic that remains unusual even today. The weak-point system encourages players to study individual characters, learn where their vulnerabilities are located and work out how to reach those areas during an actual match. Once a weak point has been successfully exploited, the resulting damage and temporary stun can create a dramatic turning point. This makes the game more than a simple exchange of punches and special moves. It is a fighting game in which identifying and attacking an opponent’s specific weakness becomes part of the strategy. Although Fighter’s History Dynamite never achieved the legendary reputation of Neo Geo series such as The King of Fighters, Fatal Fury or Samurai Shodown, it remains an interesting example of Data East’s approach to the fighting genre. Its colourful international cast, unusual weak-point mechanic, fast damage model and connection to the wider Data East catalogue give it a strong personality. For retro players interested in overlooked 1990s fighting games, the title is particularly rewarding because its unusual mechanics make it immediately recognisable once a match begins. It represents an era when fighting-game developers were still experimenting with new systems and searching for ways to distinguish their games from an increasingly crowded arcade market.
