2026-08-30

As Shu Han weakened after years of war, Wei began looking beyond conventional attacks. Deng Ai identified a dangerous and unexpected route through Yinping, seeking to bypass Shu’s strongest defenses and strike deep into its heartland. With Shu Han already under severe pressure, Jiang Wei now faced a threat that could change the fate of the entire kingdom.

English Version

For years, Shu Han had continued its Northern Expeditions, but none of its campaigns had been strong enough to break the defensive strength of Wei. Instead, the long years of warfare were gradually weakening the kingdom itself. Jiang Wei had inherited Zhuge Liang’s unfinished ambition and continued to search for opportunities in the north, yet he increasingly understood that Shu could no longer afford repeated failures. Wei, meanwhile, was beginning to change its strategy. With the Sima clan gaining greater control over the Wei court, its commanders were no longer satisfied with simply waiting behind strong defensive positions. They began looking for a way to turn Shu’s weakness into a decisive opportunity. Among the commanders who recognized this possibility was Deng Ai. He had spent years studying the mountains and roads along the border between Wei and Shu. He understood that Shu’s greatest defensive strength came from its natural barriers and fortified routes, especially around Hanzhong and the major mountain passes. A direct attack against these positions would be costly even for the larger Wei army. Deng Ai therefore began searching for a route that the Shu commanders would consider too dangerous to use. His attention eventually turned toward Yinping. The region was mountainous, remote, and extremely difficult to cross. A normal army would struggle to move through it, and Shu therefore did not regard it as a major invasion route. Deng Ai saw precisely the opposite. A road that seemed impossible to the enemy could become the perfect road for a surprise attack. He proposed sending a carefully selected force through Yinping, bypassing the main Shu defenses and entering the kingdom from an unexpected direction. The plan was extraordinarily dangerous. If the army became trapped in the mountains, the entire force could be destroyed without ever reaching the enemy. If Shu discovered the plan early, a small number of troops could block the narrow passes and turn the difficult terrain into a death trap. Deng Ai nevertheless believed that surprise was more important than numbers. He selected experienced soldiers capable of enduring difficult conditions and ordered the preparations to remain secret. Once the operation began, the Wei troops avoided the main roads and moved deep into the mountains. The paths became narrower with every mile. Cliffs and steep slopes appeared before them, and in some places even horses could not continue. Soldiers were forced to walk, climb, clear vegetation, and move carefully along dangerous slopes. Food supplies began to diminish. Exhaustion spread through the ranks. Some soldiers wondered whether the army could really reach the other side. Deng Ai refused to stop. He understood that the greatest enemy was not yet the Shu army. It was the mountain itself, together with the fear growing inside his own soldiers. If the force lost its determination, the entire operation would collapse. While the Wei soldiers struggled through the mountains, Shu Han remained focused on the traditional northern battlefield. Jiang Wei continued watching the movements of Wei forces, but he did not immediately recognize the true purpose of Deng Ai’s operation. For generations, Shu had expected a major Wei offensive to approach through Hanzhong or another established route. That expectation had gradually become part of its defensive thinking. Deng Ai intended to turn that assumption against them. When the first unusual reports reached Shu commanders, many refused to believe that Wei troops could be moving through Yinping. Only after scouts confirmed the reports did Jiang Wei realize the seriousness of the situation. He immediately studied the maps. The route from Yinping toward the Shu heartland suddenly became clear. Deng Ai was not simply trying to capture a border fortress. He was attempting to bypass the main defensive system and threaten the kingdom from behind. Jiang Wei was deeply alarmed. If the Wei force successfully crossed Yinping, the entire Shu defensive structure could be compromised. Yet Jiang Wei faced an impossible decision. If he immediately moved troops away from the northern front, Wei could exploit the weakened defenses elsewhere. If he remained in the north, the heartland of Shu and possibly Chengdu could be exposed. This was no longer an ordinary battlefield engagement. It was a crisis involving the survival of the entire kingdom. Jiang Wei urgently sent reports toward Chengdu and ordered local commanders to strengthen their defenses. But messages required time to travel, and time was precisely what Deng Ai’s operation depended upon. Deep in the mountains, the Wei soldiers had already paid a heavy price. Some collapsed from exhaustion. Others were wounded. Many wondered whether the road ahead was even possible. Deng Ai, however, understood that there was no easy retreat. If he stopped now, all the sacrifices made during the march would become meaningless. He ordered the soldiers forward and personally encouraged them through the most dangerous sections of the route. Step by step, the Wei force crossed the mountains and moved closer to the interior of Shu. In Chengdu, the danger was only beginning to become clear. The court was faced with conflicting demands. Some officials wanted troops dispatched immediately. Others wanted the capital fortified. Some hoped Jiang Wei would return quickly with reinforcements. But war did not wait for political discussions to finish. Deng Ai’s force was already appearing behind the Shu defensive system. The direction once considered too dangerous to threaten the kingdom had suddenly become its greatest danger. When Jiang Wei received the latest reports, he felt the weight of the situation. He remembered Zhuge Liang’s campaigns and understood that his teacher had always worried about more than losing a single battle. The greater danger was losing the ability of Shu Han to continue resisting. That danger had now arrived. Wei forces remained active in the north, Deng Ai was approaching from Yinping, and Shu no longer possessed enough strength to respond everywhere at once. Jiang Wei therefore had to make a difficult decision. Whatever the outcome, he knew that he could not abandon the kingdom’s last hope. Deep in the Yinping mountains, Deng Ai looked toward the distant horizon. Beyond those mountains lay the heartland of Shu. If his operation succeeded, the long conflict between Wei and Shu would enter a completely different stage. On the other side, Jiang Wei studied the military reports arriving one after another. He understood that the decisive struggle was no longer far away. In Zhuge Liang’s time, Shu had taken the initiative and marched north to pressure Wei. Now the situation was beginning to reverse. Wei had learned to exploit Shu’s weaknesses and was preparing to bring the war directly into Shu territory. Deng Ai’s advance through Yinping represented the beginning of that strategic transformation. The mountain wind grew stronger. The Wei soldiers continued forward. Behind them, the path they had crossed became almost impossible to retrace. Ahead lay the Shu heartland. Jiang Wei stood ready to respond, knowing that the coming battle would determine far more than the fate of one military position. He was no longer defending only Hanzhong. He was no longer fighting only for another Northern Expedition. He was fighting to preserve the remaining strength of Shu Han itself. The warning had finally sounded. The defenses of Shu were under threat from behind, and the shadow of destruction was moving closer to Chengdu.
