SINSIN AND THE MOUSE is a gentle Japanese-Taiwanese co-production adapted from a short story by celebrated novelist Banana Yoshimoto. Written and directed by Yukinori Makabe, the film quietly explores grief, healing, and the unexpected comfort found in human connection. Chizumi has struggled to move forward since the death of her mother, carrying an emptiness that neither time nor routine has been able to erase. Feeling emotionally adrift, she accepts a friend’s invitation to visit Taiwan, hoping that distance from home might provide a brief escape from her lingering sorrow. Instead of dramatic transformation, she encounters something far more meaningful: the slow rhythm of everyday life in an unfamiliar place. Wandering through lively streets, peaceful neighborhoods, traditional markets, and scenic landscapes, Chizumi gradually reconnects with the world around her. During her stay, she meets Sinsin, a warm-hearted young man with a Taiwanese mother and Japanese father. Their shared conversations begin as casual exchanges but slowly deepen into an honest friendship built upon mutual understanding and quiet compassion. Although they come from different cultural backgrounds, both carry unspoken emotions and personal losses that allow them to recognize each other’s loneliness without judgment.
