Thorns of Sin is a moving human drama directed by Hisashi Ueda that explores the emotional consequences of crime, the burden of guilt, and the possibility of redemption. Rather than focusing solely on criminal acts, the film examines the lives of individuals attempting to rebuild themselves while confronting the painful memories that continue to shape their futures. Erika, a former inmate, lost her father during childhood and grew up without experiencing the warmth of a loving family. Unable to form healthy relationships, she spent years trapped in cycles of loneliness, emotional dependence, and poor decisions that ultimately led to imprisonment. After her release, adapting to ordinary life proves far more difficult than she imagined. The only peace she finds comes from caring for cacti, believing that their sharp thorns are not symbols of aggression but essential defenses that allow them to survive harsh deserts—much like people living in an unforgiving society. Assigned to support Erika is Iwanaga, a probation officer who carries a painful past of his own. Twenty-five years earlier, he served time for armed robbery and has spent much of his life seeking to atone for mistakes that forever changed many lives. Determined to help Erika avoid repeating the same cycle, he patiently encourages her to believe in the possibility of a new beginning. Meanwhile, Detective Todo investigates a series of robberies that appear connected to the crime in which his own father was killed decades before. Convinced that Iwanaga may still hold the key to the unresolved mystery, Todo relentlessly pursues the truth, bringing the three individuals onto an inevitable collision course. As hidden memories resurface and long-buried secrets emerge, each character must confront personal regrets, unresolved trauma, and difficult moral choices. Rather than presenting a simple conflict between heroes and villains, the film explores how victims, offenders, and society remain connected long after a crime has ended.
