Nanashi begins with a horrifying massacre inside a family restaurant during broad daylight. Multiple customers suddenly collapse and die in gruesome fashion, leaving behind scenes of extreme violence and panic. When investigators review the security footage, they discover a strange bald middle-aged man near every victim. Yet the footage reveals something impossible: the man carries no visible weapon. He merely approaches people and lightly touches them before they suddenly erupt in blood and collapse. The surreal brutality of the murders creates an atmosphere somewhere between psychological horror and urban legend. As the investigation continues, police identify the suspect as “Yamada Taro.” However, they soon realize that even this name is false — a placeholder identity casually assigned to him years earlier during a minor shoplifting incident. In reality, the man possesses no official identity, no family registration, and no true name. He exists outside normal society as someone effectively erased from the world long before becoming a murderer. When officers search his residence, they discover the decomposed corpse of a woman, pushing the investigation into even darker territory. What makes Nanashi especially disturbing is its connection between violence and the absence of identity. Yamada grew up in orphanages without parents, social belonging, or personal recognition. Throughout his life, he was treated less like a human being and more like an invisible existence. The title “Nanashi,” meaning “nameless,” symbolizes more than simply lacking a legal name — it represents complete social abandonment. The film repeatedly asks whether a person denied love, acknowledgment, and belonging can continue to remain emotionally human. Yamada’s violence therefore emerges not as simple evil but as the explosive result of lifelong emptiness, rejection, and emotional isolation. He moves through society almost like a ghost, desperately craving human connection while simultaneously incapable of understanding normal emotional boundaries. The film’s supernatural-seeming murders also carry symbolic meaning. Rather than functioning purely as physical violence, they appear to externalize Yamada’s distorted emotional state, turning inner psychological collapse into terrifying reality. At the same time, the story explores whether anyone ever genuinely tried to save or understand him. Police officer Teruo, who once gave the nameless boy the temporary name “Yamada,” represents one of the few moments of warmth and recognition the protagonist ever experienced. Yet even that fragile connection ultimately proved insufficient to prevent his descent into monstrosity. This tragic emotional dimension gives the film greater depth beyond its violent surface. Director Hideo Jojo continues his exploration of society’s darker psychological corners by combining brutal violence with themes of social exclusion and emotional neglect. The city portrayed in the film feels emotionally cold and disconnected, a place where genuine human relationships barely exist. This atmosphere grounds the film’s shocking violence within recognizable social anxiety. 佐藤二朗 delivers an especially unsettling performance as Yamada, portraying him as simultaneously fragile, hollow, childlike, and terrifyingly unstable. Rather than a conventional serial killer, he feels like a person slowly deformed by a lifetime of invisibility. 丸山隆平 and 佐々木蔵之介 provide emotional counterpoints representing compassion and social order confronting uncontrollable despair.
