Funeral homes are always quiet at night, lights left on as if waiting. Some believe they are not only places for farewells, but also places where something else quietly continues long after everyone has gone.

I wasn’t planning to stop that night, I was just passing by when I noticed the funeral home still lit, the entrance slightly open, I slowed down without meaning to and looked inside, the corridor stretched deep into silence, the air felt strangely clean, not empty, just untouched, I don’t know why I stepped in, but I did, the quiet inside was different from the street, heavier, as if it held onto something, I walked into the main hall and saw no one, the front desk unattended, the walls lined with plaques I didn’t bother reading, I just stood there, it didn’t feel abandoned, it felt recently vacated, like everyone had just left moments ago, I moved further in, the hallway long, each light evenly spaced, every door closed, except one slightly ajar, I stopped and looked through the gap, the room was neat, a bed in the center, completely empty, but the emptiness didn’t feel right, I didn’t step inside, I just watched, then somewhere behind me, I heard a door opening slowly, not footsteps, just the quiet movement of wood, I turned slightly, another door down the hall had opened just a fraction, I couldn’t see anyone, but I knew something was there, I didn’t call out, I didn’t move closer, I simply stayed where I was until the door closed again, gently, as if nothing had happened, I kept walking, reaching the end of the hallway where another room stood open, light spilling out, inside were rows of chairs, arranged as if for an audience, but completely empty, I stood there for a moment, and the silence began to feel unnatural, like something had taken all sound away, I was about to leave when I heard movement behind me, someone walking down the corridor I had just come from, I didn’t turn around, but I knew the space behind me wasn’t the same anymore, I stayed still, the footsteps stopped a short distance away, not approaching, not retreating, just there, I waited, then slowly walked forward, out of the room, back through the hall, and out the front door without looking back, outside everything was normal again, cars passing, voices returning, as if nothing had happened, but after that night, I began noticing certain places, doors that were always closed, yet sometimes slightly open, and behind them, it always felt like someone was waiting
