Directed by Yuya Kushida, Burning Stones and Raindrops is a debut feature completed in 2022 and later released theatrically in 2026, giving renewed visibility to a film that had previously seen only a limited screening. Drawing heavily from the director’s own experience of heartbreak, the film transforms personal emotion into a raw and unsettling portrayal of youth caught between longing and disorientation. The story centers on Akira Ujita, played by Hiroki Sano, a directionless part-time worker who develops feelings for a supermarket employee but lacks the emotional and social skills to express them in a healthy way, ultimately resorting to stalking behavior. This depiction of distorted affection is not framed purely as malice but rather as an expression of loneliness and emotional inadequacy, reflecting a deeper sense of alienation within contemporary society. Seeking guidance, Akira reconnects with his former high school classmate Satsuki, an art student, and gradually becomes drawn to her. Their relationship evolves into a fragile emotional connection marked by imbalance and uncertainty, as Akira’s dependence deepens while Satsuki navigates her own struggles between artistic aspirations and real-world pressures.
