Directed by Kazuki Watanabe, The Forest of Sunekosuri is an original film that blends folklore with psychological allegory, continuing his creative collaboration with Issey Takahashi, known for their work on Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan. Inspired by the yokai “Sunekosuri,” a mysterious creature said to brush against people’s legs, the film transforms this folklore into a symbolic presence representing hidden desires and emotional unease. Set deep within an isolated forest, the story follows a wounded young man who, guided by a hauntingly gentle singing voice, arrives at an ancient shrine inhabited by a mysterious man and his beautiful wife, Sayuri, played by Nikoko Aoto. The environment appears detached from reality, where time seems suspended and daily life unfolds in a serene yet unsettling repetition. Sayuri’s presence is ethereal and ambiguous, embodying both warmth and distance, while the man, portrayed by Takahashi, carries an air of quiet complexity, hinting at deeper secrets. As the young man recovers, he becomes increasingly drawn into this dreamlike existence, initially experiencing it as a form of salvation, only to gradually sense the suffocating nature of its cyclical stillness. The film employs repetition and temporal distortion to blur the boundaries between reality and illusion, immersing the audience in the protagonist’s psychological state. Kōdai Kurosaki delivers a restrained yet compelling performance, capturing the character’s gradual shift from confusion to attachment and eventual awakening, forming a subtle yet intense triangular dynamic with the other characters. Filmed on location in Takahashi and Niimi, the lush forest landscapes play a crucial role, serving as both a visual spectacle and a metaphor for the labyrinth of human emotion—beautiful yet inescapable. Rather than a straightforward fantasy, the film operates as a meditation on love, possession, memory, and the passage of time, questioning whether a love that confines can still be embraced.
