Cinema Kabuki: Sonezaki Shinju brings to the screen one of Japan’s most celebrated tragic love stories, originally written by Chikamatsu Monzaemon, through the unique format of “Cinema Kabuki,” which captures live stage performances and presents them in cinemas with cinematic clarity. Based on a real incident from the Edo period, Sonezaki Shinju has long been regarded as a masterpiece of both Bunraku puppet theater and Kabuki, embodying the dramatic tension between personal emotion and social obligation. The story follows the doomed lovers Ohatsu, a courtesan, and Tokubei, a merchant, whose sincere and unwavering love is tested by harsh reality. Tokubei is deceived by a supposed friend and loses a sum of money entrusted to him, resulting in a devastating loss of honor in a society where reputation and duty are paramount. As his world collapses, his relationship with Ohatsu is pushed to its limits. Yet Ohatsu remains steadfast, believing in his innocence and standing by him even in the face of despair. One of the most iconic scenes, often referred to as the “under-the-floor dialogue,” captures their emotional climax, as Ohatsu tests Tokubei’s resolve and he responds with a commitment to die in order to prove his honor. Ultimately, the lovers choose double suicide as a means of preserving their dignity and affirming their love, hoping to be reunited in the afterlife. This intertwining of love and death reflects a central theme in Chikamatsu’s work—the conflict between human emotion and societal expectations. The filmed performance is based on the April 2009 production at the Kabukiza Theatre, featuring the renowned Living National Treasure Tōjūrō Sakata IV as Ohatsu, whose nuanced and deeply expressive performance captures the character’s sorrow and strength, alongside Ganjirō Nakamura as Tokubei, whose portrayal complements the emotional depth of the narrative. Through its cinematic presentation, audiences are granted an intimate view of the actors’ expressions and movements, as well as the intricate staging and musical atmosphere, making traditional Kabuki more accessible to modern viewers.
