English Version

Deng Ai’s daring crossing of Yinping had finally broken through the rear of Shu Han’s defensive system. Jiang Wei was still confronting Zhong Hui at Jiange, concentrating his forces on the mountain pass that had become the strongest barrier protecting Shu. He had succeeded in preventing Zhong Hui’s main army from advancing, but he did not realize that the decisive threat had already bypassed him. Deng Ai and his elite soldiers had crossed the remote mountains, endured an almost impossible journey, and entered the Shu heartland. Jiangyou became their first major target. The Shu defenders had never expected a large Wei force to emerge from such an inaccessible direction, and the sudden appearance of Deng Ai’s army caused confusion throughout the region. Once Jiangyou fell, the road toward Mianzhu was opened. The news sent shock waves through Chengdu. The Shu court finally understood that Wei was not conducting another border campaign. This was a war of conquest. Yet Shu Han had very few troops available for immediate defense. Jiang Wei was still tied down at Jiange by Zhong Hui, leaving the area around Chengdu dangerously exposed. In this moment of crisis, Zhuge Zhan stepped forward. He was the son of Zhuge Liang, the great strategist who had devoted his life to Shu Han. Zhuge Zhan understood that the kingdom founded by Liu Bei was now facing its final test. He could not simply watch Chengdu fall. He therefore gathered an army and moved toward Mianzhu to confront Deng Ai. His young son Zhuge Shang accompanied him. Zhuge Shang was courageous and determined to fight alongside his father, knowing that the survival of Shu Han might depend upon their stand. Mianzhu became the final major defensive barrier before Chengdu. When Deng Ai approached, he understood that Zhuge Zhan was unlikely to surrender easily. He therefore attempted to persuade him to give up rather than force an immediate assault. Zhuge Zhan refused. To him, the battle was no longer about winning territory. It was about defending the final dignity of his country and his family. Deng Ai then ordered a full assault. Wei forces attacked Mianzhu from multiple directions while Shu soldiers fought desperately from behind their defenses. Zhuge Zhan personally commanded his troops, and Zhuge Shang fought beside him. Both understood that there might be no escape from the battlefield, yet neither was willing to retreat. The fighting became increasingly fierce. Zhuge Zhan hoped that Mianzhu could hold long enough for reinforcements to arrive, but Deng Ai’s pressure continued to increase. The Shu defenders gradually lost ground. Eventually, the defensive line collapsed, and Zhuge Zhan was killed. Zhuge Shang saw his father fall, but he refused to flee. As the grandson of Zhuge Liang, he believed that he could not survive comfortably while Shu Han was being destroyed. He returned to the fighting and eventually died as well. The deaths of Zhuge Zhan and Zhuge Shang became one of the most tragic moments in the final days of Shu Han. Zhuge Liang’s dream of restoring the Han dynasty had passed through generations, and his descendants now defended that legacy with their lives. With Mianzhu lost, Chengdu had almost no meaningful defensive barrier left. Panic spread throughout the capital. Liu Shan was confronted with an impossible decision: continue fighting and risk enormous casualties, or surrender and save the people from further destruction. Prince Liu Chen strongly opposed surrender. He urged Liu Shan to make one final stand, arguing that Shu Han should fight to the end rather than open its gates to Wei. He believed that even if victory was impossible, the kingdom should preserve its honor through resistance. Liu Shan, however, had already lost confidence in the possibility of continued warfare. Qiao Zhou and other officials argued that Shu Han’s situation was hopeless and that further resistance would only bring greater suffering to soldiers and civilians. Their advice gradually convinced the emperor. Liu Chen realized that his father had decided not to fight. He understood that Shu Han’s fate could no longer be reversed. Rather than accept the humiliation of surrender, he chose death. In his final act of loyalty to the fallen kingdom, he killed his wife and then took his own life. Chengdu was filled with grief and despair. The kingdom that Liu Bei had founded and Zhuge Liang had spent his life protecting had reached its final moment. Liu Shan eventually led his officials to open the gates of Chengdu and surrender to Deng Ai. With the capital in Wei hands, Shu Han officially came to an end. Forty-three years after its founding, the kingdom that had once carried the dream of restoring the Han dynasty had been destroyed by a combination of military pressure, political weakness, and the exhaustion of decades of war. But at Jiange, Jiang Wei had not yet heard the full story. When the news finally reached his camp, the soldiers were devastated. Some wept openly. Others cried out in anger and disbelief. Jiang Wei himself was overwhelmed by grief. He had spent years fighting in the north, believing that Jiange could preserve a final chance for Shu. Now Chengdu had fallen, the court had surrendered, and the kingdom he had fought to protect no longer existed. For a moment, everything seemed lost. Yet Jiang Wei quickly began thinking beyond his grief. If he simply died with the remaining Shu forces, there would be no one left to carry the dream of restoration. He therefore began searching for another path. Zhong Hui’s army was still positioned at Jiange, while Deng Ai had already entered Chengdu. Although the two Wei commanders had contributed to the destruction of Shu, their interests were not necessarily identical. Jiang Wei recognized that the rivalry between them might create an opportunity. Instead of leading his remaining troops into a hopeless final battle, he could temporarily conceal his true intentions and wait for a chance to exploit divisions within Wei. He therefore made a remarkable decision: he would pretend to surrender to Zhong Hui. This was not an abandonment of Shu Han. It was a strategy for survival and a possible path toward restoration. Jiang Wei understood that the next struggle might not be fought directly on a battlefield. It might have to be fought through Wei’s own internal divisions. Deng Ai’s march through Yinping had brought an end to forty-three years of Shu Han rule. Zhuge Zhan and Zhuge Shang had died defending Mianzhu. Liu Chen had chosen death rather than accept the fall of his kingdom. Liu Shan had opened the gates of Chengdu and surrendered. The Shu flag was coming down, and the kingdom seemed finished. Yet at Jiange, Jiang Wei had not truly surrendered in his heart. He understood that the fall of a kingdom did not necessarily mean the end of every possibility. As long as one opportunity remained, he would search for a way to restore Shu. Deng Ai’s victory at Chengdu was therefore only one part of the larger story. For Jiang Wei, the apparent surrender to Zhong Hui marked the beginning of a final and dangerous strategy. On the surface, he would bow to the conquerors. Inside, he would continue carrying Zhuge Liang’s unfinished dream. Shu Han had fallen, but Jiang Wei’s final move was only beginning.
