Directed, written, and produced by Joe, Haoto transforms a celebrated stage production into an intimate yet politically charged wartime drama. The story begins decades after World War II when a man in his nineties walks into a police station and calmly confesses to murder. His testimony opens the door to a forgotten chapter of history centered on a mysterious institution operating under the disguise of a psychiatric hospital during the final months of the Pacific War. Inside the secluded facility are individuals labeled mentally unstable not because of genuine illness, but because their knowledge, opinions, or actions threaten military authority. Among them is Mizukoshi, a distinguished former naval officer imprisoned for criticizing the war, alongside a brilliant scientist whose pursuit of atomic research has fractured his identity. The arrival of naval commander Yomogi changes the balance within the institution as he quietly develops an ambitious plan involving diplomacy, intelligence operations, and the possibility of ending the war through secret negotiations. He recruits Tsuda, a Japanese American intelligence operative born in Hawaii, to function as a double agent while attempting to establish contact with Soviet representatives. Meanwhile, American intelligence becomes suspicious and dispatches another Hawaiian-born Japanese American, Tanaka, to uncover the truth behind the hidden operation. As multiple agendas collide within the isolated hospital, the film gradually transforms into a psychological battle where loyalty, patriotism, survival, and morality become increasingly difficult to separate. Rather than focusing on large-scale combat, Haoto explores the invisible conflicts fought within minds, institutions, and political systems. The contrast between those imprisoned as “mad” and the governments directing a devastating war becomes the film’s central metaphor, raising questions about who truly deserves the label of insanity. Retaining much of its theatrical heritage through dialogue-driven storytelling and carefully constructed performances, the film creates an atmosphere of constant tension while examining censorship, authoritarian control, espionage, and the human longing for peace. Blending historical fiction with psychological drama and political intrigue, Haoto offers a thoughtful reflection on war’s devastating influence over both individuals and entire nations.
