最初,B.J. Destiny 與 B.J.
English Version
Joe’s College Road Trip follows B.J., a high school senior preparing for college while struggling with questions surrounding identity and belonging. Influenced by his wealthy private-school friends, B.J. plans to attend Pepperdine University in California and dismisses the idea of attending the historically Black Morehouse College, despite being accepted there. His friends casually suggest that historically Black colleges are no longer necessary, reflecting how disconnected B.J. has become from the cultural and historical struggles of the Black community. Concerned by his son’s attitude, Brian attempts to reconnect B.J. with his roots, but his efforts fail. Desperate for help, he turns to Madea and Joe, who decide that the only solution is for Joe to personally take B.J. on a road trip across America. What begins as a comedic college tour gradually transforms into a deeply emotional cultural journey. Joe refuses to travel in B.J.’s modern electric car, instead insisting they drive his old Buick convertible, Ruby. From the beginning, the clash between generations creates constant tension. B.J. relies on technology and modern comforts, while Joe believes experience and hardship are necessary for growth. In one memorable moment, Joe throws B.J.’s phone out of the car and replaces it with a Polaroid camera, forcing him to see the world directly rather than through a screen. As the trip progresses through Tennessee, Texas, and New Mexico, the film slowly reveals its deeper themes. Along the way, the pair encounter old friends, strange roadside locations, and painful reminders of Black American history. At first, B.J. sees the stops as random and meaningless, but Destiny — a young woman they rescue from a trafficking situation — eventually explains the truth behind Joe’s actions. The Polaroid photographs were documenting important historical sites connected to Black suffering and resilience, including the Lorraine Motel where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated and locations tied to the murder of Emmett Till. Through these discoveries, B.J. begins to understand that Joe’s road trip was never just about visiting colleges. It was an attempt to reconnect him with the painful history and cultural legacy that shaped his identity. The film also addresses difficult social issues, including human trafficking and generational trauma, through the character of Destiny. Her friendship with B.J. exposes how sheltered he has been from the realities faced by others. Despite Joe’s crude humor and outdated methods, the film gradually reveals him as someone desperately trying to preserve cultural memory before it disappears. Produced by Tyler Perry Studios, the movie balances broad comedy with surprisingly emotional reflections on race, history, and family responsibility. By the end of the journey, B.J. no longer sees education purely as prestige or social status. Instead, he realizes that understanding one’s roots and history is just as important as academic success. Joe’s College Road Trip ultimately becomes a story about reconnecting with identity, confronting uncomfortable truths, and understanding the sacrifices made by previous generations.
