English Version
Brownie Inside Me is a warm human drama directed by Yuta Soma, centred on a young boy struggling with the loss of his younger sister after a devastating disaster. Rather than presenting grief through a straightforward realistic narrative, the film uses the idea of a mysterious fairy called Brownie to explore how a child tries to understand a loss that is simply too painful and complicated to accept. The protagonist, Kazuki Morimoto, is a fifth-grade elementary school student. Several years earlier, he lost his younger sister in a disaster, an event that continues to shape his everyday life. Hoping to begin again, Kazuki moves to a new place with his father, Yosuke, a single parent who runs a ramen restaurant. Yet a new home does not automatically provide a new beginning. Kazuki struggles to fit into his school and has difficulty connecting with the people around him. The emotional distance left by his sister’s death continues to follow him, leaving him increasingly isolated. One day, Kazuki learns about a fairy known as Brownie. While the idea might sound like a simple legend to the adults around him, Kazuki takes it seriously. He begins to believe that his sister did not truly die but was instead taken away by Brownie. This belief gives him a way to imagine that his sister might still be somewhere in the world, and he begins searching for the mysterious creature. His search may seem confusing to the people around him, but for Kazuki it represents hope. If Brownie exists, then perhaps his sister can still be found. Kazuki’s unusual quest eventually attracts the attention of his classmate Toko Izumi. She decides to help him and brings in her relative Daisuke Izumi, a translator who becomes an important figure in the story. Their involvement changes Kazuki’s search from a solitary obsession into something that other people are willing to share with him. The story also introduces Sota, a young carer who carries responsibilities connected to his family life. A lie told by Sota eventually becomes the trigger for Kazuki to leave on a real journey in search of Brownie. Toko and Sota follow him, joined by Masato, a child who has stopped attending school. The four young people come from different circumstances, but their lives become connected through Kazuki’s search for the mysterious fairy. What begins as a seemingly fantastical adventure gradually becomes a deeper exploration of the difficulties each child carries. For Kazuki, Brownie represents the emotional gap created by his sister’s death. Believing that she was taken away rather than lost forever allows him to continue imagining a possible reunion. The idea is both heartbreaking and understandable: when a child cannot fully comprehend death, imagination can become a way of protecting the heart from an overwhelming reality. The film treats this belief with warmth rather than simply dismissing it as childish fantasy. At the same time, the other children are dealing with their own forms of isolation. Sota is a young carer, meaning that family responsibilities have placed an unusual burden on him at a young age. Masato has withdrawn from school and is separated from ordinary social life. Their journey with Kazuki brings these different forms of loneliness into the same space. The film therefore expands beyond a story about bereavement and becomes a story about children whose difficulties are often overlooked by the wider society. Yosuke, Kazuki’s father, is also central to this emotional landscape. As a single father running a ramen shop, he has to balance the practical demands of supporting the family with the emotional reality that his son has not recovered from the loss of his sister. The relationship between father and son reflects another important question: how can a family continue living after something has fundamentally changed? Director Yuta Soma has previously created numerous short films dealing with children and social issues, and Brownie Inside Me marks his first feature-length directorial work. The film continues his interest in children’s lives and the problems they encounter within society. Screenwriter Yuiko Miura, known for Memories of Tomorrow, develops these ideas through a story that combines disaster-related grief, family relationships, loneliness, young caregiving responsibilities and school refusal with elements of fantasy. Brownie is therefore more than a magical creature within the plot. The fairy becomes a symbol of Kazuki’s inner world and his need to find an explanation for something that cannot easily be explained. Adults may not understand why he believes so strongly, but that belief may be precisely what allows him to endure. As Kazuki and the other children continue their journey, the search for Brownie slowly becomes a search for something deeper: an answer to loss, a way to understand the past and a path toward reconnecting with the world. The performances add further emotional dimensions to the story. Ayaki Hirano plays Kazuki, the young protagonist, while Junnosuke Taguchi portrays Daisuke, the translator who holds an important connection to the story’s mystery. Comedian Akira 100% plays Yosuke, Kazuki’s father. Through these characters, the film moves between the perspectives of children and adults, showing how difficult it can be for adults to understand a child’s grief and how important patient companionship can become. The central mystery is whether Brownie really exists, but the answer is ultimately less important than what Kazuki’s belief means to him. His search gives him a reason to keep moving when grief has made ordinary life difficult. By travelling with Toko, Sota and Masato, he also discovers that he is not the only child carrying something painful. Their shared journey allows these isolated young people to recognise one another and gradually create a sense of connection. Brownie Inside Me uses a gentle, human perspective to consider how children experience death, how families respond to grief and how people can support one another when there are no simple answers. The fantasy element does not remove the pain at the centre of the story; instead, it gives that pain a form that a child can understand. Brownie becomes a bridge between imagination and reality, between the sister Kazuki cannot let go of and the life he must eventually continue living. In the end, the journey to find Brownie is not simply a search for a fairy. It becomes Kazuki’s gradual search for a way to live again after loss, surrounded by people who are learning, in their own ways, how to face the difficulties they carry.
