《Life and Technology》並不反對科技。

English Version

Many people say that technology has taken away our freedom, that our choices are shaped by algorithms, our actions influenced by systems, and even the way we speak, work, and share is guided by predefined formats, making freedom seem smaller and the space around us feel narrower, yet perhaps freedom has not disappeared at all but has simply changed its form, because in the past freedom meant acting without visible constraints, the ability to move freely, decide independently, and change direction at any time, whereas today freedom appears differently, as we can still choose but within structured environments where technology does not forbid action but defines the boundaries within which action occurs, so options continue to exist yet they are organized, filtered, and ranked into forms that feel reasonable and accessible, meaning that freedom remains but becomes more ordered, and when freedom becomes smooth it is easy to mistake convenience for control, as effective systems rarely force decisions but instead arrange them, not commanding but prioritizing, making certain paths clearer, more visible, and easier to follow, and over time the easiest path begins to feel like our own natural choice, even though it has been shaped in advance, and in this way freedom does not vanish but becomes quieter, less noticeable, because when everything is optimized we no longer ask what we truly want but instead ask what suits us, and while suitability can be calculated, desire requires feeling, so when calculation leads and feeling follows, the nature of choice begins to shift subtly, and this shift is not uncomfortable but often reassuring, as decisions become lighter, uncertainty is managed, and responsibility is shared with the system, turning freedom into something that resembles a process rather than an exploration, yet freedom has never been a product of efficiency, as it includes uncertainty, mistakes, and decisions made without guarantees, and when technology reduces uncertainty it also reduces unfamiliarity, leaving us still choosing but within increasingly familiar boundaries, where the unknown does not disappear suddenly but gradually fades away, and this reveals that technology has not taken away freedom but has rearranged it, making it safer, more predictable, and easier to manage, so the more meaningful question is not what technology has done to freedom but whether we still remember that freedom was never meant to be seamless, because one of the most subtle transformations of our time is that freedom has shifted from something we step into toward something that is prepared for us in advance, and yet freedom does not only exist in the visible set of options but also in the ability to question how those options are formed, so as long as we are willing to ask whether other possibilities exist beyond what is presented, freedom has not truly disappeared, it has only become harder to see.
