動漫的世界觀,從來唔只係設定 | Anime Worldbuilding Is More Than Setting: How Stories Reflect Deeper Meaning | 動漫遊 017

2026-03-20

Anime worlds are often seen as imaginative settings filled with unique rules and visuals. Yet beneath these surfaces lies something more profound. Worldbuilding in anime is not just about where a story takes place, but how it expresses values, emotions, and perspectives that shape the way audiences understand the narrative.

English Version
Worldbuilding in anime is often misunderstood as the creation of settings—fantasy landscapes, futuristic cities, or alternate realities filled with distinct rules and aesthetics. While these elements are important, they represent only the surface of what worldbuilding truly achieves. At its core, worldbuilding is a reflection of how a story understands existence itself. It shapes not only where events happen, but why they matter, how characters behave, and what the audience is invited to feel and question. In earlier anime, worldbuilding often served as a stable foundation for storytelling. The rules of the world were clearly defined, and once established, they rarely shifted. This stability allowed viewers to focus on the narrative and characters without needing to constantly reinterpret the environment around them. The world acted as a consistent backdrop, supporting the story rather than challenging it. Over time, however, anime began to treat worldbuilding as a more dynamic and expressive element. Instead of simply constructing a setting, creators started using the world itself to communicate themes and ideas. The environment became a narrative device, capable of revealing hidden tensions, contradictions, and philosophical questions. In this approach, the world is not just where the story unfolds—it is part of the story itself. This shift is closely tied to broader changes in storytelling and audience expectations. As viewers became more familiar with genre conventions, there was a growing need for deeper and more layered narratives. Worldbuilding evolved to meet this demand, offering not just visual spectacle but conceptual depth. The rules of a world might reflect social structures, ethical dilemmas, or psychological states, inviting audiences to engage with the story on multiple levels. Technology and globalization have also influenced how anime worlds are constructed. With the global reach of platforms such as Netflix and Crunchyroll, anime now reaches audiences with diverse cultural perspectives. This has encouraged creators to build worlds that resonate beyond a single cultural context, blending influences and exploring universal themes. As a result, worldbuilding has become more inclusive and multifaceted, reflecting a wider range of experiences and ideas. Another important aspect of modern worldbuilding is its fluidity. Instead of presenting a fixed and complete system, many anime introduce worlds that evolve alongside the narrative. New information is revealed gradually, sometimes contradicting earlier assumptions. This creates a sense of discovery, where both characters and viewers must continuously reinterpret their understanding of the world. Such an approach mirrors the complexity of real life, where knowledge is incomplete and perspectives are constantly shifting. Characters play a crucial role in shaping how a world is perceived. Different individuals may interpret the same environment in different ways, highlighting its subjective nature. Through their experiences, the audience gains access to multiple layers of meaning within the same setting. This multiplicity enriches the narrative, making the world feel more alive and responsive. It also emphasizes that no single perspective can fully define reality. The visual dimension of anime further enhances the impact of worldbuilding. Artistic style, color, and design choices contribute to the emotional tone of a world, reinforcing its thematic elements. A bright and vibrant setting may evoke optimism, while a muted or fragmented environment can suggest uncertainty or tension. These visual cues work in harmony with the narrative, creating a cohesive and immersive experience. Ultimately, the evolution of worldbuilding in anime reflects a deeper shift in how stories are told and understood. It moves beyond the idea of setting as a static backdrop and embraces the world as an active participant in the narrative. This approach allows anime to explore complex ideas in ways that are both engaging and thought-provoking. Worldbuilding becomes not just a technical aspect of storytelling, but a means of expressing how we see, interpret, and question the world around us. In this sense, anime worlds are not separate from reality—they are extensions of it, shaped by imagination yet grounded in human experience.
