Cold Storage begins in 1979 with the atmospheric reentry of the American space station Skylab. While most of the debris burns up, an oxygen tank survives and crashes into Western Australia, where a local farmer unknowingly takes possession of it and builds a small roadside museum around the object. Hidden inside the tank is a deadly fungal organism originally sent into space for experimentation. Years later, when the farmer attempts to clean the tank, the fungus escapes, mutates rapidly, and infects everyone nearby with horrifying efficiency. In 2007, biochemist Dr. Hero Martins joins Pentagon bioterror specialists Robert Quinn and Trini Romano to investigate the outbreak. They quickly discover that the fungus is far more dangerous than expected. It not only destroys flesh but also gradually takes control of its host’s mind and behavior. After becoming infected herself, Martins briefly regains awareness and commits suicide before the organism fully consumes her. The military burns the farm to the ground and seals a surviving sample inside an underground cold storage vault hidden beneath a facility in Kansas. Years later, the government has largely abandoned the operation, renting the upper levels of the site to a civilian self-storage company while the dangerous fungus remains frozen below. In the present day, security guards Travis and Naomi discover strange alarms coming from the sealed underground section after the cooling systems malfunction and temperatures begin rising. The fungus awakens and starts spreading through the facility with terrifying speed. One of the film’s most entertaining qualities is the way it blends grotesque body horror with darkly comedic chaos. The infected creatures mutate violently, swelling, exploding, and spreading fungal spores in horrifying yet absurd ways. Rats, cockroaches, cats, deer, and humans all become grotesque hosts for the organism, giving the film the energy of a classic B-movie creature feature combined with modern sci-fi horror. Robert Quinn is called back by the military after realizing the fungus is escaping containment once again. He understands the threat better than anyone because the organism is not simply a disease; it is an evolving life form capable of adapting, spreading, and manipulating behavior. The underground storage facility gradually transforms into a deadly labyrinth filled with infected creatures and collapsing containment systems. Meanwhile, Travis and Naomi — two ordinary workers caught in the middle of the crisis — unexpectedly become central to humanity’s survival. The story escalates from claustrophobic survival horror into a large-scale biological disaster narrative, while also criticizing military secrecy and humanity’s arrogance toward dangerous scientific experimentation. As the outbreak spirals out of control, the only remaining solution is the detonation of a portable nuclear device designed to destroy the entire facility and erase every trace of the fungus. Yet even after the explosion, the film leaves behind lingering uncertainty, suggesting the threat may not be entirely gone. Cold Storage combines the parasitic terror of The Thing, the containment panic of Alien, and the energy of old-school monster cinema into a fast-paced horror adventure filled with tension, grotesque imagery, and dark humor.
