Outside an ancient city stood a temple dedicated to the Divine Guardian, a heavenly protector renowned for defending justice and punishing corruption. Generations of local residents visited the shrine to pray for safety, fairness, and protection from those who abused power. According to local belief, dishonest people often felt overwhelming fear the moment they entered the sacred hall, as though invisible eyes could see directly into their hearts. Among the city’s wealthiest citizens was a prosperous merchant celebrated for generous public donations. Behind this respectable reputation, however, he secretly exploited poor farmers through crushing debts, seized valuable farmland, and bribed corrupt officials to silence every complaint. His influence seemed impossible to challenge. One desperate farmer eventually lost his home after failing to repay impossible interest charges. With nowhere else to turn, he brought his family to the temple and prayed tearfully before the Divine Guardian, asking only that justice might someday prevail. That very night, something extraordinary occurred. Temple lamps burst into flame without human touch, and heavy footsteps echoed through the empty sanctuary. The elderly caretaker witnessed the Guardian’s statue appearing almost alive, its eyes shining with terrifying authority. Soon afterward, strange events plagued the merchant’s mansion. Financial records vanished without explanation. Precious treasures disappeared from locked rooms. Night after night, he dreamed of a mighty celestial warrior clad in golden armor, condemning every crime he had committed against innocent people. At first he dismissed these visions as ordinary nightmares. Yet the supernatural warnings intensified. During a lavish banquet, the merchant suddenly screamed in terror, begging forgiveness from an unseen figure standing before him while horrified guests stared into empty space. From that moment onward, fear overwhelmed every aspect of his life. Unable to escape either the visions or his own guilty conscience, he finally confessed his wrongdoing. He returned stolen lands, repaid those he had cheated, and personally apologized to countless families whose lives he had ruined. News of his astonishing transformation spread rapidly throughout the region. Grateful villagers crowded the temple to offer thanks for the miracle. The old caretaker quietly reminded them that although the Divine Guardian had revealed the truth, the merchant himself still chose repentance. Later, a wandering Taoist priest visited the shrine and explained that heavenly justice rarely seeks immediate destruction. Instead, divine power often grants sinners one final opportunity to awaken before harsher judgment becomes inevitable. The merchant embraced this second chance wholeheartedly. He spent the remainder of his life building bridges, supporting schools, helping the poor, and restoring trust wherever possible. His remarkable transformation inspired generations to believe that redemption remains possible when sincere remorse replaces arrogance. Through this powerful story, Pu Songling portrays the Divine Guardian not merely as a supernatural deity but as the living embodiment of justice, conscience, and moral responsibility. The greatest judgment does not always arrive through miraculous punishment but through the unavoidable voice within every human heart. When people possess the courage to confront that inner truth, genuine redemption becomes possible, proving that mercy and justice may ultimately walk together.
