English Version
Among Hong Kong’s most enduring urban legends, few are as widely told among drivers as the story of the ghost car said to appear along Tuen Mun Road, a major highway that by day is simply a vital transport link connecting the northwest New Territories to Kowloon, yet by night—especially in the quiet hours between two and three in the morning—takes on a different character entirely, where the steady flow of traffic thins into long stretches of near emptiness and the glow of headlights becomes the only constant in an otherwise silent landscape the legend has circulated for decades among truck drivers, taxi drivers, and long-haul bus operators, many of whom recount eerily similar experiences that begin with nothing more than an ordinary late-night drive and end with something that defies easy explanation; it often starts with a pair of headlights appearing in the rearview mirror, distant at first but rapidly growing brighter as they approach at an unnatural speed, their intensity so strong that they seem to wash the road ahead in white light, and just as the driver prepares to be overtaken, the vehicle surges past, its movement smooth yet unsettlingly silent, as though detached from the normal mechanics of motion, and in that brief moment when the two vehicles align side by side, some drivers claim to have glanced instinctively toward the passing car, only to freeze in disbelief at what they see—or rather, what they do not see—because behind the steering wheel, there is no one; the seat appears empty, the interior dim and lifeless, and yet the car continues forward as if guided by an unseen force, accelerating ahead before vanishing entirely from sight within seconds, leaving the road once again empty as though it had never been there at all; one of the most frequently retold accounts involves a truck driver traveling toward Kowloon in the early hours of the morning, who noticed such a vehicle approaching from behind near a junction, its headlights piercing through the darkness with unusual intensity, and assuming it intended to overtake, he shifted slightly to allow space, but as the car passed, he caught a clear glimpse of the driver’s seat—vacant, devoid of any occupant—and before he could process what he had seen, the vehicle disappeared ahead, leaving him alone on the road with a lingering sense of unease that followed him long after the journey ended; similar stories have emerged from taxi drivers, some of whom report passengers witnessing the same phenomenon, reinforcing the idea that the experience is not limited to a single individual’s perception, and though skeptics attribute these encounters to fatigue, optical illusions, or the complex interplay of light and reflection on a high-speed roadway, the consistency of the descriptions has kept the legend alive, passed from one generation of drivers to the next; over time, explanations have been proposed to give the story a deeper origin, with some suggesting that the ghost car is tied to a fatal accident that occurred on the highway years ago, involving a driver who lost control at high speed and died at the scene, his final moments forever imprinted on that stretch of road, replaying endlessly in the form of a vehicle that continues its journey without a driver, trapped in a loop that cannot be broken; whether this interpretation is believed or dismissed, the emotional weight of the story remains, transforming an ordinary road into a place layered with memory and possibility, where the boundary between reality and imagination feels thinner in the quiet hours of the night; today, Tuen Mun Road has been expanded and modernized, its lanes widened and its safety improved, yet even with these changes, the legend persists, resurfacing whenever drivers share late-night experiences or recount moments that felt just slightly beyond explanation, and for those who have spent enough time on the road after midnight, there is often an unspoken understanding that not everything encountered can be easily explained or dismissed; perhaps it is the combination of darkness, isolation, and the rhythmic motion of driving that allows the mind to wander into uncertain territory, or perhaps there are indeed fragments of past events that linger in certain places, repeating themselves in subtle ways, visible only under specific conditions; whatever the truth may be, the story of the ghost car continues to occupy a space between belief and skepticism, a reminder that even in a city defined by constant movement and modern infrastructure, there are still moments when the familiar becomes uncertain, when the road ahead feels just a little too quiet, and when a pair of distant headlights appearing in the mirror might cause even the most experienced driver to hesitate, if only for a second, before wondering whether what is approaching is simply another vehicle—or something that should not be there at all.
