English Article Version
On March 3, 1845, Florida officially became the 27th state of the United States.
Originally explored by Spanish settlers in the 16th century, Florida changed hands multiple times between Spain and Britain before eventually being acquired by the United States in 1821. For over two decades, it remained a U.S. territory while its population steadily grew.
By the mid-19th century, Florida had developed enough political and economic structure to qualify for statehood. On March 3, 1845, it was formally admitted to the Union.
At the time, Florida was largely rural, with agriculture forming the backbone of its economy. Over the next century, it would transform dramatically — from frontier territory to one of the most populous and internationally recognized states in America.
Today, Florida is known for its diverse culture, coastline, tourism industry, and major cities such as Miami, Orlando, and Tampa. But its journey as a state began on this day in 1845.
