Swatch
以塑膠錶殼取代金屬材質;
以鮮明色彩取代傳統典雅風格;
English Article Version
On March 1, 1983, the first twelve models of Swatch were officially released in Zurich.
At the time, the Swiss watch industry was facing one of its greatest challenges. The so-called Quartz Crisis had allowed inexpensive and highly accurate Japanese quartz watches to dominate the global market. Traditional Swiss mechanical watchmakers were struggling to survive.
Swatch introduced a radically different approach.
Instead of luxury materials, it used plastic cases.
Instead of traditional elegance, it embraced bold colors and playful design.
Instead of exclusivity, it offered affordability.
More importantly, Swatch transformed the watch from a purely functional object into a fashion accessory. It encouraged consumers to own multiple watches, matching them with outfits, moods, and personal style.
The launch on March 1, 1983, was more than a commercial event. It marked the beginning of a revival for the Swiss watch industry and reshaped the global perception of what a watch could represent — not just precision, but personality.
