Shan Hai Jing blurs the line between myth and history, raising questions about its true nature.

English Version

One of the central questions surrounding Shan Hai Jing is whether it should be understood as myth or as a form of historical record. At first glance, its descriptions of fantastical creatures and supernatural events suggest that it belongs firmly within the realm of mythology. However, a closer examination reveals elements that correspond to the real world, including references to mountains, rivers, mineral resources, and environmental conditions. This combination of realism and imagination makes Shan Hai Jing a unique type of text that does not fit neatly into modern categories. It is neither a conventional historical document nor purely a collection of myths, but rather a reflection of how ancient people interpreted their world. In an era with limited access to information, knowledge was often constructed through a blend of observation and storytelling. As a result, phenomena that could not be fully explained were expressed in symbolic or exaggerated forms. Creatures described in the text may represent unfamiliar animals or cultural misunderstandings, while dramatic narratives could have emerged from the distortion of oral transmission. At the same time, certain geographical details suggest that the text may preserve fragments of genuine knowledge, leading some scholars to view it as an early compilation of geographic and cultural data. Its ambiguity is precisely what makes it valuable, as it captures a stage in human thought where reality and imagination were not sharply divided. From a cultural perspective, the “truth” of Shan Hai Jing lies not only in factual accuracy but in its representation of human attempts to make sense of the unknown. In modern times, while it may no longer be regarded as a historical record, it remains deeply “true” as a reflection of early human cognition and cultural expression.
